San Quirico D’Orcia is a small but charming village located in the heart of the Val D’Orcia, a place of extreme charm. The landscapes, with cypresses, sunflowers, soft hills are already a work of art worth photographing in your mind. Strolling through the village, the most significant religious monument we encounter is the Collegiate Church, a magnificent example of a Romanesque building with three portals in three different styles, together with the Church of St. Francis, called “of the Madonna” by the inhabitants because the Madonna of Vitaleta preserved in the chapel of the same name is kept here. The enchanting gardens known as Horti Leonini are named after their owner and have kept their original structure to this day, representing a perfect example of a classic Italian garden. The lower rhombus-shaped area consists of triangular flowerbeds bordered by a double box hedge, and has a statue of Cosimo III dei Medici, sculpted by Bartolomeo Mazzuoli in 1688, in the center. The long avenue, leads to a staircase that connects the garden to a grassy forecourt in the middle of a forest of centuries-old holm oaks crisscrossed by winding paths. Impossible not to be enchanted by it. Not far from the historic center of San Quirico d’Orcia, in the heart of the hills of the Val D’Orcia, is Cappella di Vitaleta, framed between two rows of cypress trees. The church, probably of late Renaissance origin, is first mentioned in a document from 1590. The religious building was later redesigned both externally and internally by architect Giuseppe Partini in 1884, who was inspired by 16th-century models.
The statue of the Madonna attributed to Andrea della Robbia comes from Cappella di Vitaleta, which has been preserved inside the church of the Madonna di Vitaleta in the historic center of San Quirico d’Orcia since 1870.
